Speaker

I have given many talks over the past few years; mainly related to Sussex history and genealogy.

My latest talk is on the history of the Lewes Workhouse; a once imposing building in the town, but now long-forgotten.

Although my local history talks are well-researched and factual, they often lean towards the light-hearted and entertaining, such as the talks entitled 'A Turbulent History of Pub Life in Lewes', and 'A Sporting History of Sussex: from the amazing to the bizarre', which takes a look at the many unusual sporting activities within the county over the past 200 years; from jingling matches to menagerie races.

I have spoken for many organisations and societies, including the Lewes History Group, Alfriston & Cuckmere Valley Historical Society, Brighton U3A, Billingshurst Local History Society and various Women's Institutes.

However, I am also branching out into 'comedy/history' gigs, giving shorter versions of two of the above talks, but focussing more on the hilarious episodes of Victorian and Edwardian history. These I have given at The Bavard Bar and The Catalyst Club.

My next scheduled talks are -

12th December 2018 - 'Drunken Edwardians of Lewes' (20-minute comedy-history gig) - The Catalyst Club, Lewes Arms

27th February 2019 - 'A Turbulent History of Pub Life in Lewes' - East Dean & Friston Local History Group

21st March 2019 - 'A Sporting History of Sussex: from the amazing to the bizarre' - Wivelsfield Historical Society

Writer

Although I have produced much academic work on migration patterns in the 19th century, I also write about local history for various publications. I have a regular spot in Viva Lewes on the old pubs of Lewes, and have also written other articles for them on Samuel Medhurst (Lewes millwright), the city of Lewes, Delaware, USA, and The Miller's Walk in Lewes.

I have also written an article related to my bizarre Sussex sports talk for the online magazine Eurogamer
